The Council on Aging, Inc. developed and implemented Senior Outreach Services (SOS Program) 5 years ago in response to a needs assessment survey conducted with senior citizens in North, Central, and South Fulton County. The survey revealed:
Almost 80% of seniors surveyed were not aware of aging services in their community. More importantly, they had no knowledge of who to contact for information about services and assist them in applying for such benifits.
The agency served the senior community through community meetings, information dissemination, workshops, advocacy, and training. As the aging network expanded, senior members of COA became the voice of senior issues in public hearings, with elected officials, and on aging advisory groups. For overtwenty five (25) years, COA senior leaders have served on boards such as: Atlanta Regional Commision, Georgia Council of Aging, Fulton County Commision on Elderly Affairs, City of Atlanta's Task Force for the Elderly, Grady Hospital's Geriatric Board, and the Multi-purpose Advisory Boards for the Development of Multipupose Facilities. In addition, COA members have been vocal particiapants in the White House Conference on Aging, Silver Haired Legislature, and the National Silver Haired Legislature.
