Programs

ADVOCACY

  • Area Councils on Aging conduct monthly meetings in North Area, West Atlanta, East Atlanta & South Fulton County communities to identify & respond to local concerns of senior residents, and advocate with service providers & government officials regarding problems and concerns of the elderly.

EDUCATION

  • Senior Community Education Program is composed of retired senior adults trained as volunteer resource educators to educate community seniors & caregivers about Medicare Waste, Healthy Aging, Prescription Drug Assistance, etc. through community presentations to senior groups.

OUTREACH

  • Senior Outreach Services (SOS) Program trains senior adults as outreach volunteers to conduct the following tasks: 1) perform door-to-door neighborhood canvassing and community canvassing; 2) identify isolated, uninformed, and under-served seniors adults (age 60 years and older) and their care givers; 3) inform seniors adults and their care givers of available services, programs and entitlements; 4) assess senior adults' service needs; and 5) link seniors adults with needed services.

TRAINING

  • Trains seniors on how to utilize advocacy to identify and solve problems related to aging issues, as well as prepares adults to serve on the following aging advisory groups: Atlanta Regional Commission, Georgia Council on Aging, Fulton County Commission on Elderly Affairs, City of Atlanta's Task Force for the Elderly, Grady Hospital's Geriatric Board, and the Multi-purpose Advisory Boards.

SPECIAL EVENTS

  • COA sponsors Senior Health and Information Fairs to educate seniors about health and safety issues. Additionally, for over 30 years, COA has sponsored an Annual Senior Citizen Luncheon which attracts over 500 Fulton County senior citizens, supporters and public officials. Most importantly, COA organizes transportation for senior adults to attend City of Atlanta and Fulton County hearings, so that senior citizens can be a part of decisions which impact their lives and communities.
